Code of practice for managing safety and health in forestry operations

The Irish Health and Safety Authority provide guidance on how to be legally compliant in our operations.

The document is titled “Code of Practice for Managing Safety and Health in Forestry Operations”, and it has the aim of improving safety and health in the workplace. It strives to assist foresters and their contractors to be legally compliant to Irish health and safety laws, but the information is applicable to all responsible for managing risk in forestry operations. The code of practice is divided into the following sections:
 
  • Introduction – This section defines the roles of the various parties
  • Landowner roles – This focusses on coordinating the forestry activities to ensure safety and health, gathering information on health and safety, and ensuring that operations on a work-site do not influence the health and safety of other people.
  • Forestry Work Manager (FWM) roles – This includes preparing a risk assessment for the work site, selecting competent contractors, the on-site safety coordinator, and monitoring health and safety on the site.
  • Contractor role – working with the relevant forester and selecting and managing sub-contractors.
  • Sub-contractor role – Managing their own work and safety.
