Research Institutions - Skogforsk of Sweden

Skogforsk is the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden. It carries out applied research across a wide variety of forestry fields.

Skogforsk is financed jointly by the Swedish government and members of the Institute. It employs approximately 100 people, including 60 researchers, with Jan Fryk (see picture) being the Managing Director. The research is divided into two main areas:

  • Wood Supply – includes wood utilisation, technology, logistics and forest bioenergy.
  • Forest Production – includes tree breeding, silviculture and the environment.

The Wood Supply section is where the Forest Engineering research takes place:

  • Wood utilisation – Research into understanding wood properties and how they influence the end product, as well as developing tools to enable suppliers to deliver the raw material that the market requires. (Programme Manager – Lars Wilhelmsson)
  • Technology – Research into the development of technology, methods and processes in silviculture, harvesting, primary transport and secondary transport. The research focuses on existing and tomorrow’s technology and methods, transport technology and roads and work processes. (Programme Manager – Magnus Thor)
  • Logistics – Development of efficient planning and management systems to increase the value of products and reduce costs. (Programme Manager – Gert Andersson)
  • Forest Bioenergy – Increasing the efficiency of forest bioenergy systems, by improving production and harvesting methods, and better collaboration in the haulage of logging residue with other raw materials. (Programme Manager – Rolf Björheden)
