Komatsu designs a thinning harvester for good manoeuvrability and stability

The 901XC is an 8-wheeled harvester that forms part of Komatsu Forest's new XC product series.

The new Komatsu 901XC is designed for thinning in hilly terrain and on soft ground. The eight wheels ensure good stability, manoeuvrability and low ground pressure, resulting in less ground damage. The harvesters are based on a concept of a centrally mounted cab and crane, providing good balance between ground pressure and a low centre of gravity. Other key features are the rigid articulated joint and the swing axle, which in combination with the cab's tilt cylinders offer good stability and handling in difficult terrain. The harvesters in the XC series are equipped with the swinging rear axle seen in Komatsu’s six-wheeled harvesters, teamed with a bogie to create a solution with twin suspension systems.

The machine is equipped with Komatsu Forest's three-pump hydraulics, 3PS, delivering a flow of 548 litres (121 gal) per minute at 1,500 rpm. The pressure and flow optimisation of 3PS enables several crane and head functions to be used simultaneously with retained maximum hydraulic power due to the machine's hydraulic power coordination. Good operator ergonomics is ensured through the large cab volume, good visibility, smart screen placement and a levelling function to ensure that the cab is always kept horizontal. The cab has a seat with an optional rotatable seat column that can turn a full 180 degrees. Options include extra storage solutions, lighting and floor heating, as well as three different joystick systems. Source
