The excitement of new product and service releases at FinnMETKO was overshadowed by the news that Cat plans to sell their purpose-built forestry machine business to Weiler. Cat was almost synonymous with the word “logging”, with old and new Cat skidders being seen in every possible location around the globe. It reflects the modern times that we are in when a logging machine manufacturer who once had an enormous global presence, can in a relatively short space of time reach the position of retreating from the purpose-built logging machine business. We shall watch Weiler with interest to see what becomes of these machines, and naturally Cat produces a number of non-purpose-built machines that still have good applications in the forestry markets. In the remainder of Logging-on’s first edition of September, we bring good news of a number of new purpose-built forestry machines being introduced into the global market. These include two new mid-size harvesters from John Deere (the 1170G and 1070G); two new harvesters (the Fox and the Cobra) and one new forwarder (Bison) from Ponsse ; and the new 550T-PRO harvester for thinning from Eco Log. Finally, we bring you a very informative look at the developments around steep slope logging, kindly provided by John Deere.
