Fatigue is one of the key contributors to logging accidents and fatalities. The GPS units and associated monitors will be used to identify worker fatigue. An alarm will sound when workers are tired. Workers can also be remotely monitored to ensure that they do not continue working when they are excessively fatigued. The New Zealand forestry industry currently has a large focus on worker safety, with 10 workers being killed during 2013. There is currently an independent investigation into safety conditions in forestry under way. The business, Lowie Fatigue Management, use GPS monitoring vests used by professional athletes that have been modified for forestry work. The pilot study will be carried out on workers employed by HarvestPro, one of New Zealand’s larger logging contractors. HarvestPro mentions studies that show that some logging workers carry out the equivalent of running a half marathon (21.1 km) every day.
