Trusted Trucks and wireless roadside inspections

No inspection stops for your trucks if they meet certain criteria.

The National Transportation Research Centre (USA) and Volvo Trucks North America have produced an effective model for wireless roadside inspections. The norm for roadside inspections is for the vehicle to be stopped and subjected to a physical inspection. For the professional and compliant trucker, this is a waste of time and money. On-the-move weighbridges are already being used in various countries, but this only provides an indication of truck and cargo weight compliance. Other aspects that need to be inspected include safety, the driver and the cargo.

However, often the very aspects that the inspections are checking for are already being monitored by the fleet and engine management systems on the truck. These could include things such as truck and trailer weights, break condition, tyre pressures and temperatures, trailer identification, trailer lights and cargo data.

Wireless roadside inspections points would be setup. As the truck passes this point, it transmits all the data mentioned above wirelessly to the inspectors. If the truck meets all criteria, it is allowed to bypass the physical inspection. If faults are picked up, the truck is instructed to stop at the inspection point. All trucks wishing to take part would have to register with the Trusted Truck programme. Source: http://www.ntrci.org/projects/Trusted%20Truck.html
