This informative publication provides background on tyre pressure control systems and the results of various trials carried out.
The report was compiled by Ron Munro (Munroconsult Ltd) and Frank MacCulloch (Forestry Commission Scotland) in 2008, and is titled “Tyre Pressure Control on Timber Haulage Vehicles – Some Observations on a Trial in Highland, Scotland”. It is one of the final reports of the ROADEX III project, which was a trans-national cooperation project between numerous countries and organisations. The publication is structured as follows:
- Introduction – This provides background to the project and the trials, and an overview of timber haulage and road impacts.
- Tyre pressure control (TPC) – An overview is provided of what TPC is, why it is needed, the benefits of TPC, and international developments in TPC.
- The Highland trial – A description is provided of the aim of the trial, the test vehicle and its load, the haulage route chosen, the TPC system tested, and the test vehicle tyres.
- Results – Results are presented by cost, vehicle performance, tyre inflation time, TPC system reliability, fuel consumption and road impacts
- Discussion – The discussion is based on the results presented above, but also includes aspects such as general perceptions and operator perceptions.
- Conclusions – The authors conclude that TPC system can benefit timber haulage, especially where there are a high percentage of forest roads or public roads in poor condition.
- Appendices – A number of interesting appendices are also worth reading.
