The Turnaround seat is able to rotate 100 degrees, allowing the operator to select either a forward or rear-facing position. When facing the rear, the operator has full control of all machine functions. An armrest mounted joystick is used in place of a steering wheel, and a drive pedal is situated in the front and rear of the cab. A switch on the joystick lets the operator decide whether the machine will travel forward or backwards. The skidders computer system automatically adjusts the controls to the direction that the seat is facing.
The effect on the operator, from both an ergonomic and productivity perspective will be pronounced. Skidder operators usually spend a significant portion of the workday driving in reverse, resulting in the body and neck twisting. Sudden bumps while in the twisted position affect the health of the operator. The two operating positions will result in less operator discomfort, and will also allow the operator to maintain a higher level of productivity throughout the work shift. An additional advantage is that the operator does not need to waste time turning in the forest, as the skidder can easily be driven in the rear-facing position from the landing.
