Sampo designs a new forwarder for thinning operations

The FR28 forwarder carries a payload of 10-tonnes.

The new forwarder has been designed specifically for thinning operations. It was built to complement Sampo’s harvesters.  It has a low centre of gravity and good steering angles, allowing it to be highly manoeuvrable in standing trees. Sampo indicates that the forwarder had the following design focus areas:

  • Chassis: The main use of the forwarder would be in young stands where the stocking is still high. The 45 degrees of articulated steering increases manoeuvrability. The total width of the forwarder is 2720 mm (8.9 ft). The chassis allows the use of 900 mm (35in) tracks. The loading space length can be between 3.8 and 4.4 metres.
  • Drive transmission: The FR28 uses hydrostatic-mechanical transmission. The drive pump runs a mechanical gearbox. The transmission axles then divide the traction force to the front and rear bogies. The traction can be locked between the front and rear as well as between the left and right side of each bogie.
  • Cab: It is specially designed to be used in high stocking forests
  • Ergonomics: The focus has been on high visibility. The lower part of the crane is very narrow, allowing an unobstructed view in the loading direction. The windows are placed so that it is very easy to see the wheels. Due to low engine rpm, the type of hydraulic system used and good noise insulation, the cab is silent.
  • Crane: A 10 m (33 ft) crane is specially designed for thinning operations. The crane can be equipped with a weighing scale.
  • Load space: Most timber transported will be shorter pulpwood logs. However, the load space can also carry longer logs, and the load space can be adjusted between 3.8 and 4.4 m (12.5 and 14.5 ft). The headboard is hydraulically adjustable.
  • Servicing: One of the key features is a vacuum pump in the hydraulic system. It prevents oil leakages during services. The forwarder operator can switch on the pump with the ignition key immediately if there is a leakage. This prevents oil wastage or spillage.
  • Engine: A Tier 4 final phase 49 AWF common rail diesel manufactured by the Agco Power is used. The engine produces 124 kW (169 hp) of power.
