Volvo tests new technology in log haulage project
Volvo is trying to allow very large log trucks (74 tonnes) to have more access to steep and slippery forest roads. They are testing hydraulic front wheel drive transmission. Each tyre has its own hydraulic motor integrated into the wheel hubs. Drive can be maintained to the front wheel even during gear changes or when the gearbox is in neutral. Increases driveability has already been noticed. Source: www.volvotrucks.com
