New thermal imaging can detect certain safety risks while the truck is moving on the road.
The Alberta government (Canada) and Intelligent Imaging Systems of Edmonton has won a national award for its use of thermal imaging technology to detect defective commercial vehicle safety equipment. Three thermal imaging systems are located throughout Alberta. They consist of colour and thermal cameras, imaging systems and software, and monitors. The equipment observes heat patterns and the cameras display infrared radiation as visible images on the systems monitors. Transport officers can then screen vehicles for dragging brakes, flat or under-inflated tyres, overheated bearings and other running gear related safety issues.
The system has an 88% accuracy rate in spotting vehicles with these safety risks, which allows for more effective law enforcement and more importantly, safer roads.
