New technology helps to reduce cell (mobile) phone related driving accidents

Distraction of the driver is one of the most important risks for truck accidents.

Even though most drivers know that it is a dangerous habit, it continues to be common practice. On the roads of the United States alone, there are over 5000 deaths and 450,000 cell phone related accidents. 50% of employees in the US admitted to texting (SMS’ing) or emailing while driving. A company called ZoomSafer has developed safe driving software that is loaded onto the cell phone that prevents the temptation to text (SMS), email or browse the internet while driving. This enables them to stay focussed on the driving task, and if calls need to be made, only proper hands-free kits can be used.

The software uses triggers such as Bluetooth to automatically activate it into safe driving mode. This blocks any texting (sms’ing), browsing or sending and receiving of emails while driving. The driver does however stay connected. ZoomSafer responds to any unanswered calls or messages, as well as allowing the use of hands-free kits. ZoomSafer also allows the software to be customised for a specific company in order to match their cell phone use policies. Source: http://www.itsa.org/
