New publication - Timber transport best practice guide

The Timber Transport Forum of the UK has produced a guide to minimise the impact of timber traffic on roads and neighbouring communities.

This high level 12 page guide, titled “Timber Transport Management – Best Practice Guide”, provides advice on resolving log transport problems for local governmental roads managers, log haulage managers, forest owners and agents. It addresses potential problems that could occur under the following headings:
 

  • Transporting timber – Provides an introduction to the guide.
  • The partnership approach – Discusses the stakeholders involved.
  • Best practice – Outlines the best way to resolve issues.
  • Agreed route maps – Indicates how agreed routes can help overcome many problems.
  • Responsibilities – Lists the responsibilities of the forest owners, log hauliers and the local government authority.
  • Traffic management – Discusses strategies that could be employed to reduce road use or road damage.
  • Road management – Highlights the measures that can reduce the impact of timber traffic on minor roads.
  • Community relations – Provides ideas on how to manage community relations.
  • Environmental management – An overview is provided on some of the environmental issues.
  • Timber haulier training – Deals with log truck driver training.
