Logging contractor guide - Business management for contractors

FPInnovations has produced three business management guides for contractors running small businesses.

The documents are all free-for-download from the FPInnovations website. The booklets are aimed at the logging contractor who has no formal business training. The basics are provided to assist the logging contractor to run a successful business. They are written in an easy to read style. The three guides are as follows:
 

• The Role of Professional Services. The role of bookkeepers, accountants and lawyers is explained. Sources of funding are also covered.
• The Basics of Budgeting. Included in this booklet is what is a budget, why a budget should be created, what is involved in creating a budget, what is cash flow, the differences between short-term and long-term budgets, the difference between purchasing and leasing, and what the line of credit is.
• Why You Need Good Records. Covered here is why records should be collected, what records should be collected, how are records collected, what represents good information, and how does one obtain good information.
   

To assist with the learning process, FPInnovations has compiled a course outline document to supplement these guides. It gives trainers and consultants an idea of the topics that should be covered when carrying out business management courses with contractors. The contents include budgeting, keeping good records, equipment management, equipment replacement, purchasing versus leasing, employee management, and obtaining assistance from professionals. This document is also available for download from the FPInnovations website.
