Komatsu produces a new head for harvesting large trees

The C144 has been designed for demanding harvesting conditions involving large trees.

The C144 uses four feed rollers to ensure rapid feed and good stem contact. The 4th roller is positioned in the heads feed path above the frame roller. The benefit of this number of rollers and their position becomes apparent when harvesting large trees with branches that are difficult to sever. The C144 is equipped with the same length measuring system as the Komatsu 365.1. The measuring system has few mechanical parts due to the signal from the measuring wheel to the pulse sensor being transmitted via a magnetic field.

The head has a new saw unit, saw motor and bar mount. The saw motor features an integrated saw and bar feed valve. This gives precise control over the saws hydraulic requirements and the bar feed power. This prevents the chain speed from exceeding 40 m/s (130 ft/s), but still allows high cutting speeds with minimal splitting.

The C144 has four hydraulically controlled delimbing knives. The two forward knives have a new design to better process species that are difficult to delimb. There is also a fixed vertical knife and a knife on the lower section of the head. Selected technical information is included below.

Feed roller opening 700 mm (27.6 in)
Feed force 32.5 kN (7,306 lbf)
Feed speed 5 m/s (16.4 ft/s)

Rear – 710 mm (28 in)
Tilt angle 40 degrees
