How to manage worker and operator fatigue in Forestry

WorkSafe Victoria provides guidelines for managing fatigue in forest operations.

Fatigue management is more complex than it appears, and causes accidents and injuries in forestry operations due to the nature of the work site and the strenuous or repetitive work. WorkSafe Victoria (Australia) compiled a set of guidelines for workers, operators and forest managers in 2004, that provides good insight into what fatigue is and how to manage it.

The guideline, which can be downloaded for free from the web, begins with providing an overview of fatigue and workplace health and safety. A useful section on roles and responsibilities explains clearly what is expected from all involved in the operations. Specific guidance is then provided for fatigue management, including:

  • Planning
  • Identifying the hazards
  • Assessing the risks
  • Controlling the risks
  • Monitoring and reviewing fatigue management programmes
The guide can be downloaded at http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/
