How should one splice cables in cable yarding operations?

WorkSafe has a free-for-download splicing manual that gives the step-by-step process for cable splicing.

The Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia has produced a manual that contains simple instructions for splicing on cable yarding systems. Drawings are used throughout which makes the process much easier to follow and understand. The manual was developed as a tool for training new workers and as a reference guide for the experienced splicer. Splicing connections, special knots, general purpose knots and threading procedures are all covered. The contents of the manual are as follows:

  • Cutting wire rope
  • The loggers eye splice
  • The common long splice
  • The short long splice
  • Passing splice
  • Typical rolled eye splice
  • A marine rolled splice
  • Threaded strawline connection
  • Knotted strawline connection
  • Strawline spliced connector
  • The farmers eye
  • Connecting Molly Hogans
  • Molly Hogans for securing pins
  • General purpose knot
