Free-for-download video for chainsaw safety

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries provides a useful video for safe chainsaw use.

The 28 minute video, which was produced in 2008, is available in English and Spanish. It is titled “Danger: Chainsaw”, is approximately 70 Mb, and can be downloaded for free from the website link at the bottom of this article. The video is appropriate for professional chainsaw operators. It sets the tone by emphasising that the chainsaw is the most dangerous hand tool on the market.

It covers the safe use of chainsaws, appropriate PPE and how to do an inspection and safety check of the saw. The video demonstrates, using a large piece of ham in jeans, how proper chainsaw pants protect the operator. Saw selection is also described. The video shows how chainsaw kickback and poor work practices are the greatest hazards of chainsaw use and how quickly accidents can occur. A demonstration of kickback using ultra-slow motion shows how kickback occurs so quickly that the operator does not have time to react. The video also covers refuelling, safe saw starting techniques, the basic safety rules for safe saw operation, and other general chainsaw techniques. It concludes with an interview of a man who survived a life-threatening chain saw injury. Source: https://fortress.wa.gov/lni/shrl/VideoDetails.aspx?VideoID=1295
