CMO presents the second International Forest Engineering Summer School

Following on from the success of the first event, the 2016 event promises to add even more value to forestry managers, contractors and others involved in forest engineering.

In the January 1 edition of Logging-on, we gave feedback from 2015 delegates regarding the value-adding capabilities of this programme. 2016 will again bring forest engineers and loggers from around the world to a common venue for three weeks. The summer school will cover the full scope of harvesting, roads and transport activities. The course targets practitioners (forest managers/experts and contractors), researchers, academics, and equipment manufacturer staff. Practitioners with some level of operational experience will obtain the most benefit from the course, which aims to be high impact for attendees to gain better knowledge and skills to make immediate and sustainable differences at their places of work. Attendees will leave the course enriched and competent in understanding and being able to apply the principles of successfully managing the full forest engineering work cycle. The course not only teaches all aspects of the forest engineering value chain, but also leaves the participant with a set of tools to apply in his/her work environment.

Participants are taught how the five key performance areas (safety, productivity, environmental, quality and social aspects) can be effectively controlled in the logging working environment. The course includes a weekend of innovation coaching, team building and leadership – a critical part of being a competent forest engineer in today’s fast-paced and high performance environment. This part of the course is done over a weekend in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the world. The course is well suited to harvesting foresters, harvesting specialists within a forestry company, contractors, forestry researchers in harvesting and/or transport, forest engineers employed in the academic environment, forestry officials working for a government department who has responsibility for harvesting and transport activities in a particular country and forest machine manufacturers and dealers who wishes to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the environment into which they are trying to sell their machines.

The course is offered by CMO at the George Campus of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, in the beautiful Garden Route region of South Africa. The Garden Route offers majestic mountains, breath-taking views, a natural garden of rich, colourful vistas, with valleys and lakes, rivers, forests and beaches. It is situated next to the town of George, about 400km from Cape Town. The course is limited to only 20 participants, so register soon.
