Are you maintaining your chipper properly? (Part 1)

Bandit gives us some good advice on chipper maintenance.

The starting point is always consulting the operator’s manual! The clutch must be engaged and the engine turned off. The disk or drum must be installed and the battery disconnected.

The knives and anvil should be checked daily. Dull or damaged knives will waste engine power, increase fuel consumption, produce poor chip quality, strain other components, could block the discharge and result in excessive vibration. A suitable flat file can quickly put the edge back on a knife, reducing the amount of times the knife must be replaced. If the proper angle has been lost, it is possible to grind it back. This will extend knife life but will reduce the knife width. Replacement must take place when they have worn past the minimum width or have been badly damaged. The knives must be replaced as sets to ensure drum/disk balance and ensure good chip quality.

If the anvil is not adjusted properly, it will result in poor chip quality, strain on components, discharge plugging and excessive vibration. If the anvil is worn, the working edges can be ground or machine repaired, but anvil clearance must be maintained. A gauge should be used to ensure proper anvil to knife distance for optimal productivity.
