Volvo FH wins International Truck of the Year 2014

This is the third time Volvo has won the award, after also winning it in 1994 and 2000.

The award is made after an evaluation by leading commercial vehicle journalists, who represent 25 magazines throughout Europe. The FH series was introduced in September 2012. It is driver and cost focussed, and includes innovations in areas such as fuel economy, ergonomics, handling, active and passive safety, and time-saving features. A summary of some of the features are as follows:
  • It is available in 13 and 16 litre engines.
  • I-See technology is able to save up to 5% fuel. This technology uses electronically recorded information about the topography of the roads to automatically optimise gear shifting, speed and auxiliary breaking.
  • Handling is improved through an improved chassis and the option to choose individual front suspension.
  • The driving position is improved and has greater flexibility. The steering wheel has a neck tilt function, which is a first in the truck industry.
  • The driver has a better view of the road due to an increase in the usable window area in the cab and a new rear-view mirror design.
  • More upright A-pillars add one cubic metre of interior space. This results in 300 litres of additional on-board storage capacity and greater on-board comfort.
  • Truck uptime should be improved due to a new technology being used which remotely monitors component wear and vehicle condition.
