Tips for buying a new excavator - Part 2

Logging-on brings the final tips to ensure that you consider the important aspects when purchasing a new excavator.

In the March 2 edition of Logging-on, Case explained the first four aspects to consider. These were the operating weight, size and application, hydraulics, transportation and access, and controls. Case explains the following final items:

  • Operator Comfort and Ergonomics: Examine the cab for features which allow the operator to remain comfortable and productive for the entire shift. These include aspects such as good cab space, heated seats for cold climates, adjustable seats and armrests, adjustable foot pedals, a stereo systems and climate control.
  • Tracks and undercarriage: The many track options available and the impact they have on the productivity of the machine must be understood. Mid and full-sized excavators are typically equipped with steel tracks, and also come in varying sizes, widths and depths. One needs to consider ground conditions and the type of applications. Wider tracks with deep grousers provide more traction when doing heavy digging in softer ground conditions.
  • Tier 4 engines: The requirements of new Tier 4 engines need to be well understood, including filter maintenance and after-treatments systems (where required).
  • Additional features: Ensure that all the additional features are researched and evaluated to determine whether they will improve productivity or reduce costs. These includes aspects such as selectable power modes, auto-idle, LED lighting kits, rear and side-view camera packages, access points for daily maintenance, telematics and machine control.
  • Choosing the right dealer: Look for a knowledgeable dealer with a good service department. Ask other customers regarding their experiences.
  • Maintenance contracts/Warranties: Enquire about warranties and available extended maintenance contracts.
