Sweden's Skogforsk reorganises

Large Swedish forestry research institution, Skogforsk, has reorganised for its new four year framework programme.

Skogforsk is funded equally by its stakeholders and the Swedish government. The four year framework programme comprises approximately half of the institute’s activities, and has financial resources of about SEK 300 million (Euro 35 million or US$ 45.6 million) for the full period. Jan Fryk, the CEO of Skogforsk, indicates that in general the R&D elements are similar to the past, but new elements include consequences of alternative forestry systems, forest roads and processing technologies for deciduous trees. He indicates that priority is being given to the problem of soil damage and developing technology to increase forestry productivity. Research results will become even more practically orientated and have a stronger focus on economic and profitability aspects.

Organisational changes have resulted in there now being two research areas, with each consisting of three research programmes. The first research area is Forest Production, led by Marie Larsson-Stern. Her programme managers will be Bengt Andersson (Tree Breeding North), Bo Karlsson (Tree Breeding South) and Isabella Bergkvist (Forest Management, Conservation and Environment). The second research area is Wood Supply, led by Magnus Thor. His programme managers will be Gert Andersson (Planning and Communication Systems), Rolf Bjorheden (Technology and Wood) and Maria Iwarsson Wide (Efficient Forest Fuel Supply Systems).
