Research results - What affect does biodegradable oils have on chainsaw engines?

This study examined whether biodegradable oils can cause excessive engine wear or poor combustion.

The article is titled “Changes in the External Speed Characteristics of Chainsaw Engines with the Use of Mineral and Vegetable Oils”, and was published in the Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering (31(2010)2). The authors were Alois Skoupy, Radomir Klvac and Seyedmohammad Hosseini.

Excessive engine wear, or poor combustion with the resultant contaminated air that the operator inhales, could render the use of certain oils problematic. The research examined engine output, fuel consumption and composition of exhaust gases of chainsaw when using different lubricating oil types and blending ratios. The results showed no statistically significant differences between any of the oils for any of the criteria.
