Research Institutions - FPInnovations - FERIC

Most logging people have heard of Canadian based FERIC, which is a division of FPInnovations. FERIC is a large forest engineering research division and are prolific producers of research.
FPInnovations brings together FERIC, Forintek, Paprican and the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre of Natural Resources Canada. They are the world’s largest private, non-profit forest research institute. Over 600 people are employed across Canada.

FERIC is the acronym for the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada, even though the focus is no longer solely on research. It was created in 1975 and currently has over 100 staff in various offices around Canada. FERIC is funded by forestry companies, the government of Canada, and the various provinces plus the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Their aim is to support the global competitiveness of the Canadian Forest Sector through responding to its members needs. FERIC develops and helps implement innovative, cost effective, practical and safe forest engineering solutions that provide members with long-term competitive advantages, add value to their fibre supply and support sustainable forest practices. The research focuses on nine programme areas:

  • Harvesting operations
  • Transportation operations and systems
  • Resource roads
  • Silvicultural operations
  • Energy and emissions
  • Wildland fire operations
  • Value chain optimisation
  • Precision forestry
  • Forest Feedstocks
  • Extension services
