New products - Cat CT660 vocational truck

Cat enters the vocational truck market with a few road construction options.

The Cat CT660 can be configured as a dump truck, concrete mixer, refuse truck or lowboy (flat-bed) tractor. The initial release is only in North America, with the worldwide release still to be confirmed. The trucks have engine options ranging from 330 to 550 hp (246 to 410 kW), with displacements of 11.1, 12.5 and 15.2 litres. All of Cat’s latest engine technologies are included. This enables reduced engine emissions and good fuel efficiency.

Because these trucks have on-road applications, minimising the total weight of the vehicle has been high priority. Some of the methods of achieving this include a graphite engine block, an aluminium lock-up torque convertor and an aluminium-alloy cab. The truck also has an aerodynamic profile, including a sloped hood, to improve fuel efficiency and improve driver vision. The hood has a modular design, allowing individual sections to be replaced should they become damaged. Turn signals are integrated into the side rear-view mirrors.

Cab comfort has not been overlooked. There is an air-suspension driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, good sound insulation, a climate control system, easy to read gauges, and easy to clean surfaces. The cab also makes provision for Cat’s Product Link, which is a telematics system for data collection from on-board computers to a secure internet site.

Orders will be taken from 1 April 2011, with shipments beginning in July 2011.
