Logging research - FORMEC Forest Engineering research papers published

Logging mechanisation knowledge has taken a great step forward with the publishing of relevant and practical research papers in the latest issue of the Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering.
The logging research papers can be found in the September 2011 (Vol.32, Issue 2) issue of the Croatian Journal of Forest Engineering. All articles are from papers submitted to the International Symposium on Forestry Mechanisation (FORMEC). FORMEC was established in 1966 to address challenges related to the mechanisation of forestry. The symposium in Austria in 2011 attracted more than 200 delegates from 38 countries, with FORMEC 2012 being held in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The full list of papers included in the journal is included below:

  • Improving forest operations management through applied research (Brown, Strandgard, Walsh & Mitchell).
  • Using on-board GPS to identify training needs of helicopter pilots (Horcher & Visser).
  • Integrating animal and mechanical operations in protected areas (Magagnotti & Spinelli).
  • Utilization rates and cost factors in timber harvesting based on long-term machine data (Holzleitner, Stampfer & Visser).
  • The correlation between long-term productivity and short-term performance ratings of harvester operators (Purfurst & Lindroos).
  • Bunching with a self-levelling feller-buncher on steep terrain for efficient yarder extraction (Acuna, Skinnell, Evanson & Mitchell).
  • Efficiency of John Deere 1470D ECOIII harvester in poplar plantations (Danilovic, Tomasevic & Gacic).
  • Analysis of accidents during cable yarding operations in Austria 1998 to 2008 (Tsioras, Rottensteiner & Stampfer).
  • Workload benefits of using a synthetic rope strawline in cable yarding rigging in Norway (Ottaviani, Talbot, Nitteberg & Stampfer).
  • Discussion on economic and energy balances of forest biomass utilisation for small-scale power generation in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan (Aruga, Murakami, Nakahata, Yamaguchi & Yoshioka).
  • Comparing terrain and roadside chipping in Mediterranean pine salvage cuts (Marchi, Magagnotti, Berretti, Neri and Spinelli).
