John Deere has its roots deeply tied into forestry. The first plough produced was forged from a sawmill blade. Loggers began to use John Deere tractors in forestry in the 1930’s, but it was in the 1940’s that the MC Crawler was used by loggers for various tasks such as skidding, loading and other general-purpose tasks. The 440 skidder was released in the 1960’s, which increased operator comfort and operation productivity.
The John Deere 743 rubber tyred Tree Harvester was released in 1977. John Deere partnered with Hitachi in 1988 to manufacture purpose-built, excavator-based logging machines. In 2000, John Deere acquired Timberjack and Waratah. Through Timberjack, the pioneering walking harvester was also developed. Source: www.JohnDeere.com
