Guide to safe working with timber and chainsaws

Felling timber using chainsaws is one of the most dangerous forestry tasks. This guide assists us with the key safety aspects of chainsaws.

The guide, produced by the Health and Safety Authority of Ireland, is intended to serve as an overview of the important safety aspects of using chainsaws for timber harvesting. The guide covers the following areas:

• Using the chainsaw: General safety aspects are covered.
• Safety checks: Safety devices which the chainsaw must have are covered.
• Maintenance of chainsaws: A short section covering maintenance procedures.
• Training in the safe use of chainsaws: A brief section highlighting the importance of chainsaw training.
• Personal protective equipment: Chainsaw safety equipment that should be available and used is highlighted.
• Chainsaw kickback: Advice is provided on how to avoid kickback.
• Starting the chainsaw: Information is included on hot and cold starting.
• Risk assessment: Examples are provided of what a risk assessment should contain.
• Felling timber: Felling safety aspects and cutting trees less than the diameter of the guide bar are included.
