Electronic and semi-electronic log tracking technologies

How to keep track of your logs from the forest to the customer.

The International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) has produced a document titled “Tracking Sustainability: Review of Electronic and Semi-Electronic Timber Tracking Technologies”, Technical Series 40. Forest managers increasingly need to have information about where their products move to. The document is structured as follows:
 

  • Introduction
  • Drivers of electronic timber tracking systems. This section includes an overview of current technologies, an overview of the types of systems and considerations for choosing a timber tracking service provider.
  • Case studies. This includes case studies from Africa (Liberia), Asia Pacific (Indonesia), South America (Brazil), South Pacific (New Zealand), and a genetic fingerprinting case study in South and Central America.
  • Conclusion on systems. The enabling and limiting factors are included.
  • Recommendations. Recommendations for choosing a timber tracking system.
  • Outlook.
