Countermeasures for fatigue management in transportation

A new publication provides good guidance for fatigue related accidents in the transport industry.

Truck drivers are on the road for long periods at a time. They are required to have high concentration levels at all times, as the consequences of falling asleep, or even a simple lapse in concentration can be disastrous. The very fact that so much concentration is required, made even more difficult when driving on poor forest roads, results in fatigue levels being reached quicker than usual. A new publication by the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, titled “Countermeasures for Fatigue Management in Transportation”, deals with these issues.

The document starts by providing an overview of what sleepiness and fatigue is, how to measure sleepiness and fatigue, crashes and risk factors, and countermeasures. The report results cover laws and regulations, self-administered countermeasures, technical solutions, infrastructure, education and training, and fatigue risk management. The results show that a holistic approach is necessary to address fatigue risks. The driver needs to take ownership about not driving while fatigued. Education and information play an important role in this. Drivers also need support to make the decision to stop for a nap or take a caffeine break, which have been shown to be the only proven and lasting fatigue countermeasure. There is also the need for safe and secure rest areas for drivers, and companies need to have a fatigue risk management policy that clearly spells out what to do when the driver feels sleepy.
