Bell Equipment to offer 'de-tiering' options to their customers.

This will allow customers greater re-sale flexibility.

Bell Equipment is a global leader in the design and production of articulated dump trucks (ADT). De-tiering is the process whereby Stage 3B and Interim Tier 4 engines fitted in Bell ADTs for emissions-regulated markets can be made suitable for sale as pre-owned machines in less regulated markets. Bell Equipment explains that before the introduction of Stage 3B in Europe and Interim Tier 4 in the USA, the earthmoving industry in these countries sold machines at the end of their useful life. Bell Equipment has been manufacturing their ADTs with Stage 3b engines since 2011 and with Interim Tier 4 engines since 2013, in collaboration with engine supplier, Mercedes Benz and MTU, and is now able to offer a de-tiering solution.

De-tiering can be applied to the engine once the machine has left an emission-regulated country. This will also stop any fault codes being produced if no AdBlue or diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is filled. It will also stop an Interim Tier 4 engine from going into inducement. This will allow Bell Equipment customers to have the option of selling their machines into all of the pre-owned markets that have traditionally been available to them. However, the disparity in sulphur levels between regulated and less regulated countries also needs to be considered. Diesel in emission-regulated countries has very low sulphur levels. Many of the other countries in the world sell diesel with much higher levels of sulphur. Bell is also able to overcome this problem in countries with a sulphur content of 500ppm or less, and the ADT would only require a software update and the associated paperwork. The catalyst also needs to be replaced with a conventional silencer and the engine service intervals need to be reduced.
