An overview of work study nomenclature and protocols

Forest Engineering Southern Africa (FESA) has produced a bulletin examining different forestry work study protocols in global use.

The publication is titled “Work study nomenclature and protocols: A literature review”, and it appears as ICFR Bulletin 03/2012. The authors were C Lu and P Ackerman. The document defines common work study techniques used in forestry, including method study and work measurement. Time study is one of the most common work measurement techniques. The bulletin provides an introduction to these techniques, and includes their historical origins. There is no internationally agreed standard work study nomenclature. The following time models were investigated:

  • British Standards Institution
  • Nordic Forest Study Council
  • International Union of Forest Research Organisations
  • Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Forestry (Australia)
  • International Labour Organisation
  • Other nomenclatures and time models

The bulletin concludes that existing protocols and nomenclatures are suitable and can be adapted to suite a local countries conditions. Source: http://www.icfr.ukzn.ac.za/collaboration/forest-engineering-southern-africa/
