A guide for keeping your commercial truck roadworthy

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) of Ireland provides us with information to manage the safety of our logging trucks.

Even though the guide is focussed on the general category of commercial vehicles, it is still very much applicable to logging trucks. The guide emphasizes the importance of preventative maintenance and rectifying problems before a trip. The following aspects are covered in the guide:

  • The roles and responsibilities of management: Including maintenance systems and designated persons.
  • The roles and responsibilities of drivers: Including daily checks.
  • Preventative maintenance systems: This describes what the operators should do, what the driver should do, and who should maintain the vehicle.
  • Planned routine maintenance
  • The drivers walk-around check: This explains the purpose of this check, how long it should take and what should it include.
  • Reporting and recording systems
  • Assessing your maintenance systems

Annexures contain useful examples of checklist samples for different vehicle categories, and poster examples. The information is valuable for any commercial truck fleet operator.
