Using lower road impact vehicles for log haulage

The Timber Transport Forum of the UK provides guidance in a new report.

Log trucks must often make use of lower design specification roads and have the potential to cause increased road maintenance costs. This guide focuses on lower impact truck technologies that can be used to limit the damage caused to susceptible roads. The guide emphasises that a site specific analysis must take place, as some of the technologies can increase haulage costs.

The guide explains the problems with certain public and forest roads, and why specialised transport equipment will sometimes be required. The common configurations of truck are highlighted, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. The influence of the number of axles, number of wheels, wheel aspects (such as width), tyre pressure control systems and reducing tyre pressures is discussed. Useful tyre pressure matrixes and truck wear factor figures help illustrate some of the key factors. Other aspects of interest include a section on selecting appropriate vehicles and delivering lower impact haulage.
