Useful technical publications for loggers from the Virginia Cooperative extension

These include farm tractor logging, efficient log trucking and forest planning.

Each publication is approximately four pages long, but contains concise and useful information. The three publications that grabbed Logging-on’s attention are as follows:

  • A logger’s guide to forest planning: The guide begins with an overview of forest planning and then provides 12 steps to carrying out comprehensive planning.
  • A checklist for efficient log trucking: The checklist describes 10 steps to improve log truck efficiency.
  • Farm tractor logging for woodlot owners: This publication provides some background into the use of farm tractors for logging, and then proceeds to discuss the criteria required to be successful. Additional information is provided for when using the farm tractor as a skidder and a forwarder.

The publications were all compiled by Robert Shaffer of Virginia Tech. Source: http://www.pubs.ext.edu/category/forestry.html
