The new H8HD will be used on large wheeled carriers and excavators.
Ponsse had a site at demo where the cable-assist machines were demonstrated and another where the remainder of the fleet was displayed and demonstrated. Even though the Ponsse Scorpion can no longer be considered new (it was released at Sweden’s Elmia show in 2013), its appearance and technology still seem to make other new wheeled harvesters seem aged. This impressive harvester attracted much attention during the live displays. The intense technology focus from Ponsse is evident. The new technology is not just to improve the efficiency and safety of the machines, but has also been able to allow machine simplicity for operation and maintenance. The virtual reality goggles available for testing at the stand gave a glimpse into the future of operator training. Logging-on tested the VR goggles and they give a very realistic view of the forest while harvesting is taking place. This will be a very effective technology when used in conjunction with simulators. The
H8HD can be installed on the Ponsse Bear harvester and on any over 20-tonne track-based machine. Its powerful feed combined with its geometry enables the head to firmly support larger trunks on the feed rollers. It has a reinforced frame and tilt arm to give it the robustness needed in tough operations. The wide feed roller geometry supports even large stems with the feed rollers instead of the delimbing blades. This places less pressure on the knives, improving fuel economy, feeding speed and measuring accuracy. The optimal tilt pivot geometry minimizes the upwards torque of the head, giving smoother feeding and better grip of the tree. The Opti automation system is able to supply the required cutting precision, enabling trees to always be fed directly to the specific length at maximum speed. The H8HD is also available with a top saw for processing trees with much sweep and lots of branches. Processing delimbing knives are longer than standard knives for picking logs more easily from a pile.
The head weighs from 1,380 kg (3,042 lbs) excluding the rotator and with the top saw weighs from 1,580 kg (3,483 lbs) excluding the rotator. It requires an operating pressure of 28 MPa (4,061 psi). It uses a 3 feed roller system, has a feeding force of 36 kN (8,093 lbf) and a maximum feed speed of 5 m/s (16.4 ft/s). The maximum opening width of the rollers is 740 mm (29.2 in). The Ponsse H10, designed for processing only, was also demonstrated. It is designed for over 25-tonne track-based machines.
